Dental Extractions

SPOKANE, WASHINGTON

Your teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but there are times when extraction is your only option. We, at MyDentist in the Spokane, WA area will spare no effort to save a tooth, but if one needs to be removed, you can rest assured that you will receive exceptional, gentle care!

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

There are many reasons you may need a tooth extraction. There may be irreparable damage due to injury or deep cavities, which cannot be resolved through medications or root canal therapy. Advanced gum disease may loosen a tooth, leaving no option but tooth removal. We also need to extract wisdom teeth, known as third molars if they are decayed, infected or impacted.

At times, we may need to extract teeth blocking permanent ones from coming in the correct position. We may also need to remove teeth during orthodontic treatments to help correct crowding in a mouth, or to make room for teeth to shift into place.

What To Expect

Before your dental surgery, we will discuss the available sedation options for your comfort. We may recommend inhaled sedation, or in some cases, oral sedation. Simple extractions involve removing teeth that are visible and accessible, while surgical extractions involve teeth not visible or easily accessible due to being broken or impacted. Most patients report minimal discomfort during or after tooth extraction.

The Healing Process

The healing process begins as soon as your oral surgery is concluded. Make sure to follow the post-operative instructions we provide you for the best results. Also, for 48 hours after the procedure, refrain from smoking, rinsing vigorously, spitting, or drinking through a straw to avoid dislodging the clot forming in your tooth socket. If that happens, you may develop a painful condition called dry socket which will require medical attention.
