Is It a Dental Emergency?

Before determining whether you or a loved one are experiencing a dental emergency, ask yourself the following questions: Is there severe tooth pain? Is there swelling to the mouth, jaw, or face? Has there been trauma to the face or mouth? Are there loose or knocked-out teeth? Is there heavy bleeding from the mouth? Dental Emergencies

During a dental emergency, knowing what to do and acting fast can help increase your chances of saving a tooth. If a tooth is knocked out, rinse it carefully, while making sure not to touch the root. Gently place it back into the socket if possible, or carry it in a small container of milk. Contact us immediately.

If you are experiencing a severe or persistent toothache, you may have an infection or an abscess that will require immediate attention. Make sure not to place any aspirin on the aching area, and contact us immediately. Other conditions that will require urgent care include a cracked, broken, fractured, chipped or dislodged tooth, or injury to the soft tissue of the mouth including the gums, cheek, or tongue.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While it’s not possible to entirely eliminate the risk of dental emergencies, some precautions can help. Using a mouthguard during sports activities can protect your mouth from an impact. You should also refrain from biting down on hard foods or candy, or using your teeth as tools. Maintaining proper oral hygiene practices at home and keeping up with your dental checkups and professional cleanings will prevent decay, cavities, and gum disease, which could cause dental emergencies down the road.
